Questions

How many stitches tall is a cross stitch letter?

In the classic and bold fonts here, capitals and numbers are 7 stitches tall, and lowercase letters with tails (g, j, p, q, y) go 2 stitches lower. The large font doubles everything: 14 stitches tall. On 14-count Aida, 7 stitches is half an inch (1.3 cm).

How wide will my name be?

Most letters are 5 stitches wide with 1 stitch between them, so a 5-letter name in the classic font is about 29 stitches, or about 2.1 inches (5.3 cm) on 14-count Aida. The generator above shows the exact stitch count and size for your fabric.

How do I center a name on my fabric?

Fold the fabric in half both ways to find the middle, find the middle stitch of your chart (half the stitch count across and down), and start stitching there. Leave at least 3 inches (7.5 cm) of fabric around the design for framing.

Which DMC color is good for lettering?

Dark, solid colors read best: 310 Black, 3371 Black Brown, 321 Red, 820 Royal Blue Very Dark or 890 Pistachio Green Ultra Very Dark. Use 2 strands on 14-count Aida, or 3 strands for bolder letters.

Can I add a name to a photo pattern?

Not inside the photo pattern yet. Make the photo pattern, then chart the name here in the same DMC color and fabric count, and stitch it under the picture, leaving 3 to 5 empty rows between them.

Is it free?
