How to turn a photo of your dog into a crochet blanket pattern

Updated · Photo Pattern Maker

Crop the photo close to your pet's face, upload it, pick single crochet (graphgan) or corner to corner (C2C), 60 to 100 stitches wide and 4 to 8 colors. Photo Pattern Maker gives you a graph in Red Heart Super Saver colors with row-by-row color counts and the yards of each color.

Steps

  1. Pick a photo with one clear subject. Blankets look best with 4 to 8 colors and a simple, high-contrast photo. A pet portrait 60 to 100 stitches wide makes a throw-sized graphgan.
  2. Upload it on the crochet pattern generator page and choose the width and how many colors. The preview updates as you change them.
  3. Get the full pattern: After that the full pattern is $1.99 on its own, or from $0.20 a pattern with credits ($4.99 for 15). Credits never expire.
  4. Print the PDF (A4 or Letter): the chart with symbols, the color key with codes and counts, and what to buy.

How big will the blanket be?

In worsted weight single crochet (about 3.5 stitches and 4 rows an inch), a square graph comes out like this. C2C tiles are about an inch each, so a C2C blanket of the same width is much bigger.

GraphWidthYarnTotal yarn
30 × 3021.8 cm (8.6 in)in worsted weight yarnabout 70 yards
40 × 4029 cm (11.4 in)in worsted weight yarnabout 124 yards
60 × 6043.5 cm (17.1 in)in worsted weight yarnabout 278 yards
80 × 8058.1 cm (22.9 in)in worsted weight yarnabout 493 yards
100 × 10072.6 cm (28.6 in)in worsted weight yarnabout 771 yards
150 × 150108.9 cm (42.9 in)in worsted weight yarnabout 1733 yards

How many colors should I use?

Four to eight. Every color is another yarn to carry or bobbin to wind, and pet fur reads well in a few shades. Look at the preview with 4, 6 and 8 and pick the fewest that still looks like your pet.
